A garage floor takes more abuse than any other slab in a house. Vehicle weight, hot tires, dropped tools, jack stands, spilled fluids and, if it is a working shop, whatever the work itself involves.

SM Construction LLC pours garage slabs, shop floors and workspace concrete across Phoenix and the surrounding Valley, finished flat and finished appropriately for what the room is actually going to be used for.

What This Work Solves

  • Floors that are not flat enough

    Toolboxes that roll, jack stands that will not sit square, cabinets that need shimming — all of it comes back to a floor that was never made properly flat. On a shop floor this is the difference between a room that works and one that annoys you daily.

  • Water with nowhere to go

    Vehicles bring in rain and wash water. A floor needs a deliberate fall toward the door, or a drain, so water leaves rather than sitting at the back wall.

  • Surfaces that will not take a coating

    Epoxy and polyaspartic coatings are unforgiving about what they are applied to. The finish, the flatness and the moisture condition of the slab all determine whether a coating bonds and stays bonded. If a coating is the plan, the slab should be poured knowing that.

  • Slabs not built for the equipment

    A two-post lift, a heavy press or a loaded work vehicle changes the specification. Those loads need to be known before the pour, not discovered after the equipment arrives.

How We Do It

  1. Establish what the space is for

    Parking, working, storing equipment or all three — that decides thickness, reinforcement, drainage fall and the surface finish.

  2. Set elevations against the building

    Slab height has to work with the door threshold, the stem wall and the driveway or apron outside, so those are confirmed before excavation.

  3. Excavate, base and compact

    The footprint is excavated, base material placed and compacted, and the fall toward the door built in at grade.

  4. Form, reinforce and set embeds

    Forms are set, reinforcement placed and supported, and anything that has to be cast in — anchors, sleeves, a drain — set to position.

  5. Place and power-trowel

    Concrete is placed and screeded flat, then floated and power-trowelled to a hard, dense surface suited to the intended use.

  6. Joint, cure and hand over

    Joints are cut, the slab is cured, and we tell you how long before vehicles go on it — and, if a coating is planned, how long the slab should be left before it is applied.

Garage Slabs: Common Questions

What finish should a garage floor have?

A smoother, power-trowelled finish is usual for garages and shops — it is easier to sweep and to keep clean, and it is what a coating needs. Where a floor gets wet regularly, a little more texture is worth having for grip. We will match the finish to how the space is used.

I want to epoxy the floor later. Does that change anything?

It does, so tell us up front. Coatings depend on the surface finish, the flatness and how much moisture is coming through the slab. Knowing a coating is coming lets us finish the slab appropriately and advise how long to leave it before the coating goes on.

Can you replace an existing garage floor without touching the walls?

Usually, yes. The existing slab is saw-cut inside the walls, broken out and removed, then the base is corrected and a new slab poured to the same elevation. We will look at how the walls and stem wall are built before confirming it for your garage.

I am installing a car lift. Does the slab need to be different?

Yes — a lift concentrates significant load into a small number of anchor points. If a lift is planned, get us the manufacturer's foundation requirements and we will build the slab to them.
