Phoenix is where SM Construction LLC is based, and it is the city we work in most. It is also the most varied place in the Valley to pour concrete, because the housing runs from 1950s ranch homes on generous lots through to subdivisions finished in the last few years.
That range shows up directly in the work. In the older central and south Phoenix neighborhoods a large share of what we do is removal and replacement — driveways and walkways that have reached the end of a long life. In the newer areas on the city's edges it is more often adding what the builder did not: extending a patio, widening a driveway, pouring a slab for a shop or a shed.

An older housing stock than most of the Valley
Central Phoenix has a great deal of mid-century housing, and concrete from that era is now well past the point where cracking, settlement and spalling are common. Much of our Phoenix work is assessing whether a slab is worth repairing or has reached the point where replacement is the sensible answer.
Lots that were laid out before three-car garages
Homes built in the fifties, sixties and seventies were given driveways sized for the cars of the time. Widening a driveway, adding a parking pad or extending toward a side gate is one of the most frequent requests we get in these neighborhoods.
Working around mature trees
Established Phoenix neighborhoods have large, old trees, and their roots are a genuine factor in flatwork. Lifted, cracked walkways and driveways with a root running under them need the cause addressed at base level, not just a new surface poured over the top.
Heat that dictates the schedule
Phoenix summers change how concrete is placed. Fresh concrete sets faster in extreme heat, which shortens the window for finishing and, for decorative work, for stamping. Starting early, staffing a pour properly and — on larger slabs — moving the pour to overnight are all normal responses to that.

Do you work throughout the city of Phoenix?
Yes. Phoenix is our base and we work across the city, from the central and south Phoenix neighborhoods out to Ahwatukee, Laveen, Deer Valley and the north Phoenix communities.
My driveway is original to a 1960s house. Repair or replace?
It depends on how it is failing rather than on its age. Concrete of that vintage can still be structurally sound with a tired surface, in which case resurfacing is a real option. If it is cracking because the base beneath it has moved, a new surface will crack in the same places. We will look at it and give you a straight answer.
Can concrete be poured in the middle of a Phoenix summer?
Yes, and a great deal of it is — it simply has to be planned for. Hot weather shortens the working window, so pours start earlier, the crew is sized so placing and finishing keep pace, and large slabs are sometimes moved to overnight. It is a scheduling question, not a reason to wait until autumn.
